Prompt #3
If Scout and Jem’s mother was still around
I think Scout would be very different if her mother was there. I think Scout would act more like a lady. Also Scout would not think about beating up boys or think about defending Atticus with violence. Scout will start to follow her mother’s example instead of Jem’s. Aunt Alexandra might like Scout because of how she would act and would not have to stay at the house.
I think Jem would change not as much as Scout would. Jem has already started to follow in his father footsteps. If the mother figure was there he would not change that much. But he would lose a lot of the lessons Calpurnia has taught him. He would not have gone to the black church witch means he would not have interacted with black people that much.
I think Calpurnia would be completely gone from the story. Calpurnia is only in the story to fill in the motherly parts. If the kid’s mother never left that means Calpurnia was never hired to work at the Finch’s house. Also if Calpurnia leaves the whole family looses the interaction with black people they get while being with Calpurnia. The kids would have never gone to the church and see the differences between white people and how they to black people and how they live.
I think the change in the book would be worse because with there mother Scout already will learn life lessons from her. She will also being acting like a girl too. The story makes it more interesting to be missing the mother figure and to see Scout mocking the boys. If her mother was there she would be mocking her which we don’t want to see Scout change into a girl, we want to see her acting like a boy but being told that wasn’t right.
