To Kill A Mocking Bird

Journal #4
Chapters 10-12
Perspective of Jem

Dear Diary,
Today Scout found out the hard truth about Atticus, he is kinda boring. The poor man is half blind. There is nothing really interesting with Atticus. So Scout and I decide to go outside. When I look over I see Tim Johnson acting weird. Dogs usually don't go mad during the cooler months. We decided to go tell Calpurnia to see what we could do. When we told Calpurnia instead of her giving us a lesson on what is happening she instead goes crazy. She calls Atticus to come home because Tim is going crazy. She then runs outside and goes over to the Radley house to warn them not to come out but no one answered. She then quickly comes back and tells us to stay inside.

Atticus finally comes home with the sheriff. I think Atticus brought the sheriff just in case the dog was crazy and going to start attacking people. But the weird thing was Tim was not acting like crazy he was walking lopsided walking around. What happened next shocked Scout and me. The sheriff decides to let Atticus shoot the dog. Atticus only took one shot and the dog's life was instantly taken from him.

Next day we decide to take a little walk to town well one of the house we have to pass is Mrs. Dubose. She is a mean old lady who always shouts at Scout and I. One day I had some money so I bought Scout a baton.Another day we pass Mrs. Dubose and she decided to call Atticus a "Nigger Lover" which I did not take so lightly. I decided to take Scout's new baton and use it to destroy her camellia bushes. I was very adjacent at the time. Well as a punishment I had to say I was sorry. Clean up her yard and bushes and I had to read to Mrs. Dubose everyday except Sunday for a month.

Next day I go to Mrs. Dubose's house. It was horrible! It was dark and scary. I much rather be in the Radley house. I go to her room where she is in her bed waiting for me. Scout decides to come along. I start to read and when ever I could not say a word I would usually skip it. Mrs. Dubose would not let me do that. She would work the word out with me. She seemed to entrust me. Well soon enough the month is over. While Scout and I where at home Atticus gets a phone call. He leaves then comes back. He hands me a package and tells me it is from Mrs. Dubose, also he tells me she just passed away. I look in the box and she gave me a camellia flower. I was perplexed for a moment. It was horrible how she acted me then decides to give me a flower to make up for it. I threw it in the fire and went back to my room.

In the morning I see Calpurnia. After a long discussion we decide to go to church with Calpurnia. It was very interesting to go to Calpurnia's church. There was a lot of black people. I left a little isolated. One black person seemed like she wanted no part of us, her name was Lula. Calpurnia told her to leave us alone and she was all downright mean. We come and meet Reverend Sykes. He was very nice to us and welcomed us. He seemed very ingenuous. We get inside and everyone knows what to do with out any books. When we get to the end the Reverend ask for money. He finds out they they do not have enough and he makes everyone stay until they have enough. We also meet Calpurnia's son Zeebo. When we get done we head back home and waiting on the porch it Aunt Alexandra.
