Journal #6
Prompt #3
If Scout and Jem’s mother was still around

I think Scout would be very different if her mother was there. I think Scout would act more like a lady. Also Scout would not think about beating up boys or think about defending Atticus with violence. Scout will start to follow her mother’s example instead of Jem’s. Aunt Alexandra might like Scout because of how she would act and would not have to stay at the house.

I think Jem would change not as much as Scout would. Jem has already started to follow in his father footsteps. If the mother figure was there he would not change that much. But he would lose a lot of the lessons Calpurnia has taught him. He would not have gone to the black church witch means he would not have interacted with black people that much.

I think Calpurnia would be completely gone from the story. Calpurnia is only in the story to fill in the motherly parts. If the kid’s mother never left that means Calpurnia was never hired to work at the Finch’s house. Also if Calpurnia leaves the whole family looses the interaction with black people they get while being with Calpurnia. The kids would have never gone to the church and see the differences between white people and how they to black people and how they live.

I think the change in the book would be worse because with there mother Scout already will learn life lessons from her. She will also being acting like a girl too. The story makes it more interesting to be missing the mother figure and to see Scout mocking the boys. If her mother was there she would be mocking her which we don’t want to see Scout change into a girl, we want to see her acting like a boy but being told that wasn’t right.

Chapters 10-12
Perspective of Scout

Dear Journal,
The last few days have been very tough on the family. This whole thing with Atticus's case and the whole family being called "Nigger Lovers" is really starting to contradict me. I am so annoyed with everyone calling Atticus names and telling me things that i have no clue about. It is really getting on my last nerve. I don't think that I will ever be able to understand Atticus. Just the other day he told us to shoot the tin cans but he said that he knew we would go for the blue jays and he said that was okay but to never kill a mockingbird. He was very strict in saying that it was a sin to kill one. He said that it's not right to hurt something that has never done anything to you. For some reason, I thought that this might be directed more towards Arthur than the birds themselves. Ever since the farm, he has been trying real hard to raise us right. I don't know what to say to him. So much is happening and it's hard to not question what it all means or why it is happening now. The other day, me and Jem went out exploring in town with our rifles. We went to the crossroads and suddenly, in the distance, we saw Tim Johnson limping from down yonder. Tim is the town's beloved dog who now looked as if he had a disease. He was walkin' real slow and Jem suggested we go and get Calpurnia. And so we did and it seemed as if that was the smart thing to do because it turns out Tim was sick and we called the sheriff. Cal then went around the neighborhood knocking on doors and shouting "Stay in your house! There's a mad dog!" What I didn't understand was that it was February and this usually only happened in August. Atticus arrived with the sheriff just in time when Tim was on the street in front of our house. He was walking real slow now and was looking for a place where he could die. I know from past experience that it's important that you stay away from the animals otherwise you could get sick and die just like them. They were talking about what to do with the dog and they realized that putting it out now would be the safest thing they could do. So they decided to take the shot but then realized that they didn't know who could shoot. The Sheriff gave Atticus the gun and my dad said that he hadn't shot in ten years. I didn't know what he was talking about because he never told us that he had shot before. They went back and forth cantankerous about who was best. Soon enough, Atticus held the gun and soon enough, we found out about his secret. He had the best shot in the town. Mr. Tate, the sheriff told about his younger days and how he was called "One Shot Finch" and how he could shout 15 birds with 15 shots and call it a waste of bullets. After this, I reevaluated the way I looked at my father. Maybe he wasn't so useless after all he was sure better than his contemporaries that was for sure. Maybe even cooler than the other kid's young parents with the cool jobs. Later that week, we started going to town more often. the only way there was to go through Mrs. Dubose's path. We would have to walk in front of one of the meanest people's houses in the world everyday. Every time, she would say something about Atticus that we wished was inaudible. Jem couldn't stand it and one day, he got so mad, he broke my baton and trashed her yard. I was sad about the baton but he bought it for me so I was more sad for him. On top of this, his punishment was reading to he for a month. this turned out to be an extra week and shortly after, she passed away. We found out that she died because aof a morphine addiction. It was her painkiller and luckily she died with out any pain. She left Jem a box which I found was quite nice and depressing as well. Luckily she didn't die in peril. Then, when Atticus was away, we accompanied Calpurnia to church and the one that she goes to. At first, I was really excited to be going to church and be the man of the family but when we got there, we found trouble with a tall black lady who Calpurnia talked to in a very strange way. I then realized that she was trying to talk like the rest of them but I didn't ask her until Scout brought it up afterwards. I was worried about the girl but then she left us alone. We then met Reverend Skykes who was the first reverend of the church. The service was very different from the one that I'm used to. There were no books or anything. We later learned that Cal was the only one there that could read. Instead, all of them would repeat the words of Cal's son Zeebo. It was a very nice experience that was later ruined by the visit of Aunt Alexandra.

I really liked it. But there was a lot of things happening with no break. Make sure to have different paragraphs instead of one huge one.

Chapters 13-14
Perspective of Aunt Alexandra

Dear Diary,

I just told the kids that I was staying for feminine figure in the house. Jean did not like this. I started to meet some new ladies in town. I invite them over to give Jean a little bit of a taste how being a female is. I can't believe that poor Jean has been in company with two boys who could not teach her the way women acts. Young Jem is starting to see the light he is acting more and more like a young gentlemen everyday. I over heard Jean asking Atticus if she could go over to Calpurnia's house. Which to my understanding she is a maid to them. I had to step in and tell her that she would not be able to. In retaliation she decides to tell me that she was not talking to me and turns back to get Atticus's answer. I don't know why she likes to antagonize me so much. But I just shook it off and started again with helping Jean. I also believe that Jeremy and Jean should learn more about the Finch's. They now nothing about there family. All they know about is the people they have personally met.

Atticus finally tells Jean that as long as I am here she will have to listen to what I tell her. I have just acquired a new threat to Jean. Jeremy and Jean get in this huge fight. Jean not even thinking or acting like a lady attacks Jeremy. I watch and see what happens. Atticus did his job though, he extracted them from each other and sent them to bed. I would have done worse but I think that was a step in he right direction. When Jean goes to her room there was a boy emerges from under her bed. Atticus decides to leave him and give him some food. As long as the boys sleep in the same room it was better but if I was Atticus I would have sent him right home. No questions asked. But tonight Atticus looked very pensive.

Chapterd 10, 11, 12

Perspective: Scout

Chptr 10
School is not getting any better but I'm holding my will to fight and clobber them to china. But something I noticed is that Atticus is ALOT older than all the other kids dads. He never does anything but sit on the couch. Now that I think about it he never goes hunting or any of the stuff normal dads do. I mean even his job is just sitting in an office while other dads are mechanics and engineers. Even when me and Jem got air rifles he didn't teach us how to shoot!! He only told us to shoot at blue jays and tin cans, not mockingbird. I got the ingenuous idea to ask Ms. Maudie about why I couldn't shoot mockingbird. She told me that mockingbirds don't bother you so you shouldn't bother them. I couldn't help but think of boo radley when she said that. While I was talking to her I decided to also ask about why atticus is so old. Miss Maudie tried to tell me how Atticus wasn't just an old man. It wasn't till Tim Johnson, the neighborhood dog, caught rabies and was terrorizing the neighborhood. Tim went next to the Radley house and it was a one shoot chance, so the sheriff entrusted the gun to Atticus to my surprise. In the perplexity of this all turns out he was a sharp shooter and killed the dog in one shoot. Ms Maudie told me he didn't hunt because he felt it was a unfair advantage to the animals he hunted. Me and Jem became less Fanatical about the Radley place and more into the town of maycomb. Jem got money for his birthday and decided to buy a toy train and get me a baton that I've been eye balling. We usually pasted ms dubose who seemed isolated, the only interactions with other humans she had was when she was yelling at them on her porch. Atticus told us to just ignore her and we did but one day she said mean things about there family and that pushed Jem to the edge. After he bought his toy he took my baton and murdered Ms. Dubose's flowers and left my baton there. I started crying and he kicked me and helped me up. When atticus found out he made Jem go to Ms. Dubose's house. She made us read to her for two hours a day for a month. The next day me and Jem went there and read. It didn't even seem like she was listening all she did was rant about everything. Eventually the timer rang and we went home. After about A month or so I began to notie that we stayed there longer and longer as each day pasted . We were pretty acquainted with the schedule. When a month pasted Ms. Dubose told Jem to read for another week. Atticus agreed and Jem and Atticus had a debate about it. Jem finally agreed and after that week we were finally free. After about a month or so the poor old woman dies. Turns out she was a morphine addict. Before she died she made a box with the most prettiest flower ever and gave it to Jem. It was really boring ever since Jem became more mature and what made it worse was that dill couldn't wouldn't come back because of his mom re-marriage. The only interesting thing to happen was going to nigger church with calpurnia. At first this black lady was angry at us but then the rest of the church was very nice and welcoming. I sat adjacent to Jem. They talked about Tom Robinson and how his kids and wife needed money, at least $10. I was flooding with questions. I asked why Robinson was in jail and Calpurnia said it was because of rape accusations. I asked her what rape was but she wouldn't tell me.

To Kill A Mocking Bird

Journal #4
Chapters 10-12
Perspective of Jem

Dear Diary,
Today Scout found out the hard truth about Atticus, he is kinda boring. The poor man is half blind. There is nothing really interesting with Atticus. So Scout and I decide to go outside. When I look over I see Tim Johnson acting weird. Dogs usually don't go mad during the cooler months. We decided to go tell Calpurnia to see what we could do. When we told Calpurnia instead of her giving us a lesson on what is happening she instead goes crazy. She calls Atticus to come home because Tim is going crazy. She then runs outside and goes over to the Radley house to warn them not to come out but no one answered. She then quickly comes back and tells us to stay inside.

Atticus finally comes home with the sheriff. I think Atticus brought the sheriff just in case the dog was crazy and going to start attacking people. But the weird thing was Tim was not acting like crazy he was walking lopsided walking around. What happened next shocked Scout and me. The sheriff decides to let Atticus shoot the dog. Atticus only took one shot and the dog's life was instantly taken from him.

Next day we decide to take a little walk to town well one of the house we have to pass is Mrs. Dubose. She is a mean old lady who always shouts at Scout and I. One day I had some money so I bought Scout a baton.Another day we pass Mrs. Dubose and she decided to call Atticus a "Nigger Lover" which I did not take so lightly. I decided to take Scout's new baton and use it to destroy her camellia bushes. I was very adjacent at the time. Well as a punishment I had to say I was sorry. Clean up her yard and bushes and I had to read to Mrs. Dubose everyday except Sunday for a month.

Next day I go to Mrs. Dubose's house. It was horrible! It was dark and scary. I much rather be in the Radley house. I go to her room where she is in her bed waiting for me. Scout decides to come along. I start to read and when ever I could not say a word I would usually skip it. Mrs. Dubose would not let me do that. She would work the word out with me. She seemed to entrust me. Well soon enough the month is over. While Scout and I where at home Atticus gets a phone call. He leaves then comes back. He hands me a package and tells me it is from Mrs. Dubose, also he tells me she just passed away. I look in the box and she gave me a camellia flower. I was perplexed for a moment. It was horrible how she acted me then decides to give me a flower to make up for it. I threw it in the fire and went back to my room.

In the morning I see Calpurnia. After a long discussion we decide to go to church with Calpurnia. It was very interesting to go to Calpurnia's church. There was a lot of black people. I left a little isolated. One black person seemed like she wanted no part of us, her name was Lula. Calpurnia told her to leave us alone and she was all downright mean. We come and meet Reverend Sykes. He was very nice to us and welcomed us. He seemed very ingenuous. We get inside and everyone knows what to do with out any books. When we get to the end the Reverend ask for money. He finds out they they do not have enough and he makes everyone stay until they have enough. We also meet Calpurnia's son Zeebo. When we get done we head back home and waiting on the porch it Aunt Alexandra.

Chapter 4-7

Perspective: Scout

School is so boring!!! compared to the first day the rest of the year was boring. The only fun thing was this knothole in this tree past the radley house. There were so many interesting things inside that knothole! One day there were gum and pennies. Me and Jem started wondering if it was but summer came so we stopped passing that tree. When school resumed we thought it might be someones treasure spot or something but it wasn't. later on we found two soap carvings that looked eerily similar to me and Jem and a broken pocket watch. Then Nathan Radley covered the knothole with concrete to "save the tree"

We played a game with a tire and I rolled into Boo Radley's yard! I don't think I was more scared in my life. I thought I heard him laugh to! After that freighting experience we decided to play a game where we acted out what we think happen to Boo Radley. Then my dad Atticus caught us but we said it had nothing to do Boo. after that they still wanted to play! I called out. They finally gave up.

They started playing by themselves so I hung out with Miss Maudie Atkinson who let us use her yard as long as we stayed away from her flowers. I asked her about Boo Radley and she claimed that those stories were just a load of crap. Jem and Dill decided to write Boo a letter and leave it on his porch. They used a fishing pole to get it there, But had to stop because Atticus caught them. Later on they peered through Boo's window and saw a long black shadow fall over Jem, so they ran and Jem caught his pants on the fence as they ran they heard gun shots blast off. They got to their house and saw a crowd infront of the Radley residence. Nathan Radley said he saw a black guy walked on his property, but he didn't shoot him. Someone noticed that Jem wasn't wearing pants and he said he was playing strip poker. That night Jem decided to get his pants back. I told him it was a bad idea but he went any ways, but found them sewn and folded on the other side of the fence.

Comment:
Really good taking on the perspective of the character. Watch out for capitals in the beginning of a sentence. But very good job at telling the event sin the book. I also really like how you put sound affects and put different endings to your sentences like exclamation points. I thought that really made your blog more like the character.

To Kill A Mocking Bird

Journal #3
Chapters 8-9
Perspective of Atticus

Dear Diary,

Today it started to snow. The only other time I can remember it snowing was in 1885. The kids love it. They asked me how to make a snowman, but I had no idea. Jem really is smart. He thought of a way to make a snowman and just started with the idea. He first went to go get more snow and get some earth too. After he made it, it almost looked like Mr.Avery. I told Jem he would have to change something on it so it did not look like Mr.Avery. After all of that it still looked good. Which I was unanimous with it.

Next day I wake up the kids because Miss Maudie's house is on fire. We rush over to help her. I tell the kids to go stand over near the Radley's house to stay safe. I help the firefighters with getting all the furniture out. Mr.Avery decides to go to the second floor a throw her mattress out of the window. Then when he tries to get out of there he gets stuck. but he made it in the end. When the fire is taken care of we go back home. I ask Scout where she got the blanket she had on from. Both Jem and Scout have no idea. I told them it was Bo who gave it to her. Boo is chameleon that is why they did not see him. After that Jem tells me the truth about everything they have been up to. Before work I go by and tell Miss Maudie what the kids told me. Surprisingly she was not grieving over her house. She was more happy about it because she said now she can have more garden space instead of a huge house.

Next we go up to Finch's Landing for Christmas. Scout tells me about people telling her about me defending a negro. Which I am doing because I will never live with myself if I didn't try. I tell Scout not to care about what people say. We go to the train station to meet up with my brother Jack. Uncle Jack brought my gift. I got Jem and Scout air riffles for Christmas. Scout keeps cussing and I think she might have picked it up from school. She tries to be nice to Francis but he is just a mean kid.

After Scout beats up Francis I have a talk with Jack. I hoped Scout evasion Francis. Scout is really getting tormented with Christmas. to We start to talk about the case. I tell him that I will lose because it is the Ewell's word against a Negros. I also told him how Scout and Jem will get a lot of flack from this case and how they have to be strong and to not care about what people say. I knew Scout was listening so when I give my point I tell her to get back to bed. I think she thought she was being sneaky about it, but I knew the whole time.

To Kill A Mockingbird

Journal #2
Chapters 4-7
Perspective of Ms. Maudie Atkins

Dear Diary,

I just say Scout today. She went near the Radley's house and pulled something out of a tree. I am not sure what she pulled out of it but I hope it was hers because it is not nice to steal from other people. I keep seeing Scout, Jem, and Dill playing a new game. I think they are reenacting Arthur Radley's life story. One day I saw them act out a scene where Arthur stabbed his own father. I have to say it look real. I almost went to see if they really stabbed him, but from another angle he really swung and missed.

I have actually acquired a new friend. Atticus's daughter, Scout. She seems very interested with the Radley house. She asked me if I think Arthur is still alive. Which my reply was yes. Even though you stay indoors all the time does not mean you are dead.

Next day things got strange. I hear a gun shot and hurry over to the crowd in front of the Radley house. It seems Nathan Radley shot his gun to scare a negro away. But then the Finch children and Dill come running up looking all scared. The son of Atticus, Jem is missing pants.

After that day the kids keep on finding these little gifts in the tree. But Nathan was not happy and I saw him filling the hole with cement so the kids could not mess with it anymore.

Sincerely,
Maudie Atkins

To Kill a Mocking Bird

Journal #1
Chapters 1-3
Perspective of Jem

Sadly I break my arm. I was afraid I would not be able to play football anymore. People thought I was a little eccentric for only thinking about football. Scout and I start to think of our past in Maycomb. With our father Atticus only because our mother died two years after Scout was born.Scout and I found a new friend named Charles Barker Harris but we call him Dill for short. We told him the stories about Arthur Radley. Which made me feel very intimidated. Arthur Radley is indigenous to Maycomb. He lived there is whole life. We told him the time Arthur stabbed his father with scissors. What everyone calls him in Maycomb is Boo like a ghost. It Dill irked me because he seemed more interested in the house more then he was afraid of it.

The next day we go to school and I find Scout beating up a kid named Walter Cunningham. I made her stop. She told me she was beating him up because of lunch. The Cunningham's will not take anything from anyone if they can not pay it back. Instead of beating him up I decide to invite him to dinner with us. We all go to dinner and Walter and Atticus keep talking about crops. Scout gets called in by Calpurnia. Scout comes back but picks up her plate and goes back. I think she finished her dinner in there.
