Chapter 4: Painted Faces and Long Hair

Lord of the Flies
Chapter 4 – Painted Faces and Long Hair

“Why Did the Fire Go Out?”

Perspective: Ralph

What things are you having trouble adjusting to on the island that are different from your life at home in England?

At home in England I did not have to worry about everyone else in the whole country. Now I have to take care of little kids and be leader of the big kids. I did not know Jack so life was easier. The island is easy to adjust to because it is ours. Now say it was another person’s island then we would have to listen to there rules. No I get to make the rules so it is an easier thing to adjust to.

How do you feel about the littluns?

I feel the littluns need to start helping us out or we will never survive. I think that we would be a little better off I everyone would help in the same place. So if the littuns helped us out we would have a better place.

What do they do with their time?

In the littluns spare time they be lazy, hang out, play around, and just to kids. But because we are on the island we will need to work or the kids might not survive.

Why do you all paint your faces?

Jack and the hunting group painted their faces because he thinks that the pigs can see him, which is why they haven’t caught anything. But the pig was kind of a balm.

What does this foreshadow?

I think the painting of their faces is foreshadowing that maybe when one of them is wearing the clay they will start to go missing. Or maybe they will start killing more pigs for the boys to eat.

How do you feel when your face is painted?

I think it is stupid when Jack thinks that the pig can see him and can tell where he is. Then when he puts on the makeup he is some superhero or something. Which maybe he was being blatant.

Why doesn’t the passing ship see you on the island?

The ship does not see us because Jack said he was going to watch the fire and when we get up there, there was no Jack and the fire was out. Then when he comes from hunting he acts like it is nothing. He is so belligerence toward me. He gives me a lot of malevolently.

Why was the fire allowed to go out?

The fire went out because Jack impalpable soul thought maybe instead of being rescued he should go hunt instead. So he left his post and let the fire go out.

How do you re-assert your chieftainship? (How do you take charge of the boys once again?)

I call a meeting to discuss what we need to do. Right away with all the boys.
